The putter remains the most frequently used club in a golfer’s bag, yet it is often the most neglected aspect of practice for the average golfer. While golfers worldwide utilize advanced technology to analyze and refine their swings—employing three-dimensional frame-by-frame analysis, high-speed video, and precise measurements of spin rates and launch angles after impact—the focus on putting tends to be less technically driven. Instead, many players resort to trial and error, selecting different putters with limited understanding of how specific factors such as length, lie, loft, head style, weight distribution, grip style, and swing weight influence performance on the green.
Recent technological advancements offer new opportunities to quantify and improve putting performance. Quintic, utilizing a smartphone’s high-speed camera (see note1 below), tracks the golf ball’s initial 12 inches (30cm) of travel during a putt. This allows for objective measurement of parameters such as ball speed, launch angle, and spin—information that can inform decisions regarding putter design, fitting, and swing mechanics.
For optimal results, position the camera between 9 and 12 inches (23–30cm) from the ball aligned parallel to the target line. The camera should be oriented close to ground level and adjusted according to your device’s capabilities. The software offers several camera settings including Composite Delay, Manual Recording, Focus, Shutter, and ISO, along with three presets tailored for different environments:
- Indoor: Optimized for indoor conditions
- Outdoor (overcast): Adjusted for cloudy outdoor conditions
- Outdoor (sunny): Tailored for bright sunlight outdoor conditions
Once the software detects the ball — indicated by the yellow circle turning green and an audible beep — proper positioning is crucial. For right-handed golfers, hit from the left side of the screen; for left-handed golfers, from the right side. Marking the spot on the green where you will strike multiple putts can help improve consistency.
The software calculates ball speed, launch angle, and spin. To measure spin direction (forward, neutral, or backward), draw a thick black line across the golf ball aligned vertically at address; if absent or misaligned, spin measurement will not be provided.
The resulting composite image overlays various positions of the ball during the stroke into a single view—these images are saved to Photos, Quintic Album, and Players Folder. Additionally, users can compile a Players Summary that records all putts with timestamps indicating morning, afternoon, or evening sessions. This summary displays statistical data including averages, standard deviations, and ranges to support performance tracking.
Note1: For optimal results, Quintic app requires recording at 1080p resolution at 240 FPS. Devices that do not support this setting may produce less accurate data.
